The Codes of Culture: Interaction, Transformation, Synergy
Young Academics International Conference
Miedzygórze 2009

As our main interest we have chosen the literary issues addressing the problem of literature as a medium of culture especially as an interdisciplinary approach. In our opinion this subject, having been burdened with rich tradition, requires a degree of systematization as well as settling in modern reinterpretational contexts.

We would like this young academics session to form a bold discussion based on solid arguments and exemplary material allowing us to outline new research perspectives.

Therefore, we would like the discussion to be centered around two polarized group of issues:

Literature as a medium of culture. Between tradition and modernity:

  • Culture-generating interdisciplinarity and inspirations from romantic theory of arts correspondence;
  • Musicality of a literary masterpiece from the interdisciplinary perspective;
  • From interaction to transformation between literature and painting, sculpture, architecture (including landscape architecture), graphics;
  • Film, radio and stage adaptations of literature including the problems of intersemiotic translation (the problem of faithfulness to the original; code conversion mechanisms; visualization methods; reception, bestsellers adaptations);
  • Film and stage play conversion into literature (novelization of blockbuster movies; simultaneous premieres of film and literary versions).

Literature as a medium of culture. Between aestheticization and ideologization:

  • Literature in media and media in literature – the interference and evaluation problems;
  • Narration as a culture-generating tool (e.g. in commercials and computer games);
  • Cultural meta-narrations and the problem of literature in other media;
  • Synthetic genres combining varied codes (e-book, CD books, googlization of literature);
  • Liberature in its genealogical dependence (an attempt to evaluate the phenomenon);
  • Internet hypertexts.
